At age 18 he landed in L.A., 2,500 miles from home.

He carried only two suitcases and his life savings in cash: $360.

24-hours after arrival, he landed his first job in financial services as a teller.

Two years later, he became the youngest Operations Trainer for a major S&L, circa 1980.

He helped found an executive recruitment firm, dialed for CD dollars, became a bank rep selling funds and annuities, managed an L.A. based team of 12 bank reps, and then decided that wholesaling was where he wanted to be.

With a copy of Forbes' Annual Mutual Fund edition in hand, he started cold calling national sales managers.

On the third dial, one requested his resume, which he sent overnight via FedEx.

He completed the gauntlet of interviews in NYC and was named to be the wholesaler for the Western U.S. covering financial institutions at age 31, later becoming the firms' top producer.

Now, 45 years on, when asked how he created all that good career fortune, he offered a quote he recently came upon:

"Good luck is what is left over after intelligence and effort have combined at their best." ~Branch Rickey
