Comfortably uncomfortable?

How do you feel when:

  • you're about to pitch a new product for the first time?
  • you're called upon to speak at a national meeting - and the head of distribution is in attendance?
  • you need to explain (simply) a complex concept to an advisor - having only learned about it yourself in last 24 hours?

All of these caused me to be temporarily uncomfortable.

With the emphasis on temporarily.

To get past the discomfort, Harvard-trained brain scientist Jill Bolte Taylor suggests a 90-second rule.

She's says, "When a person has a reaction to something in their environment, there’s a 90-second chemical process that happens; any remaining emotional response is just the person choosing to stay in that emotional loop."

Said another way, for the first 90-seconds your brain is in control.

What happens after those 90-seconds is up to you.

How comfortable can you get with being uncomfortable?
