Ship to nowhere

Pure high seas torture.

That's how I describe the advisor day cruise to Ensenada that I helped sponsor.

I vowed never to set foot aboard a ship again.

Recently I violated that vow by touring the Queen Mary.

This floating museum honors one of the great passenger ships that ever sailed by preserving the stories and the technology of the past.

Amongst the relics on display was a large cord board which served as the main telephone switchboard of the ship.

Operators sat at the board and assisted parties that wished to speak with each other by patching one phone line's cord into another - physically connecting the conversation.

An elegant communication technology in a much simpler era.

Today, with the non-stop connectivity of smartphones, we risk getting lulled into thinking that the emailed/texted word can replace real conversations.

In doing so a nuance is lost.

And so might the real meaning of your intended message.

Wholesaling is a craft that requires keen communication skills.

To rely too heavily on the typewritten word may inadvertently send your practice on a misdirected journey.
