Feeling the pressure?

Pressure

You're just like everybody else

Pressure

When Billy Joel wrote the lyrics to Pressure in 1982 the business world was a far different place.

Email was reserved for academics, government workers and military.

It was one year before the first mobile phone went on sale - at a cost of almost $4,000.

Which meant wholesalers needed rolls of dimes to feed payphones, where a five minute call averaged 17 cents.

Today we are technologically assaulted with every conceivable ring, ding, buzz, beep, chirp, alert, and notification.

And with each menacing reminder we feel pressure, often accompanied by the need to read/listen/respond as soon as possible.

This phenomenon is so prevalent that it's been labeled by Northern Illinois University researchers as "Workplace Telepressure".

Adding insult to injury, every time you divert your attention to react/respond it takes more than 20 minutes to fully recover and refocus on the task at hand.

So what's a wholesaler to do?

Turn off every alert that you can possibly tear yourself away from.

On every device that you use.

Yes, you'll feel like a two pack a day smoker quitting cold turkey.

You'll also relieve more than a little pressure.
